Ballmer gets most of it right.

He comes from a tradition that I consider "evangelical." When he was going to Trinity (Chicago area school in Evangelical Free heritage), Bob Jones University would have been in the "fundamentalist" camp -- not the more open Evangelical branch of Christianity. Writing about Billy Graham, Bob Jones Jr. said, "We are against anything unscriptural; and, therefore, we have to take a stand against this ecumenical evangelism, even when it is our friends who are guilty of Scriptural disobedience."

Weyrich, using a lot of money earned from beer sales (Coors), helped to shape the changes that we live with today -- the shift of the old Confederacy to the Republican Party in the 1970s. There was, at the time, some concern in that camp that Jimmy Carter -- a born-again Christian and Sunday School teacher -- was a real threat to Weyrich's right-wing politics. With Coors money, plus Jerry Falwell and an assist from Ronald Reagan, he succeeded. Part of the rebranding was to dump the term fundamentalist. Weyrich also thought he could draw off working-class Catholic Democrats with the abortion issue. That issue worked really well since it suggested profligate sex was behind it.
